Ten minutes into the opening period, Montreal is leaving their zone on a pretty routine breakout, when one of the Montreal defensemen sends a pass just a bit too far for Roman Hamrlik to reel in. Alex is just coming on the ice from the opposite side as the puck goes off the boards, just a few feet in front of Hamrlik's stick. Alex chips the puck off the boards, does a spin-a-rama around Hamrlik, collects the puck and skates in on Carey Price with Kyle Chipchura closing in. Alex leans in as Chipchura hauls him down, but Alex is able to keep one hand on his stick and flip the puck just past Price's skate and into the net.

They play hard from the drop of the puck, but Wayne Stephenson has a great night, stopping 31 of the 32 shots he faces. Robert Picard, who took a puck to the face in warmups and received a dozen stitches in the locker room, comes back to open the scoring at 10:53 of the second period. In the third period, the play is controlled by Montreal, as Washington only manages 3 shots on goal. However, the scoring is all Washington as they score on 2 of those 3 shots to win, 3-1.
